UK-based engine producer Perkins has celebrated the production of its 20,000,000th engine. The company started in business building engines 81 years ago and this milestone was celebrated with a ceremony, attended by 70 employees. The 20,000,000th engine was a 1206 two-stage turbo Tier 4 diesel engine, built at its factory at Peterborough in the UK. A new joint venture factory in South Korea has now been completed for the Hyundai Cummins partnership. The 78,045m2 Hyundai Engine Company (HCEC) plant is located in Daegu and will produce engines for construction machines. The two firms agreed a deal to establish the joint venture plant, capable of producing 50,000 engines/year, back in December 2012. This operation has a sales target of US$500 million by 2020, and is expected to create about 3,700 direct and indirect jobs in the region by 2020.

Driveline technology continues to develop rapidly, with many manufacturers at this year’s Conexpo exhibition showing Tier 4 Final emissions solutions, along with a host of fuel saving transmissions and hydraulic systems, all aiming to reduce operating costs for the customer. However, while there was certainly a hybrid presence at the show, things haven’t perhaps moved forward as fast as many had expected.
