Engine manufacturer MTU, a division of Rolls Royce Power Systems, is trialling its Capacitor Power System (CaPoS) in three mining trucks operating in South Africa. CaPoS is a maintenance-free starter system using super capacitors. The integration of two CaPoS modules on a mining truck equipped with an MTU 4000-series engine can be operated using four batteries instead of the usual eight. MTU claimed the service life of the remaining batteries has been extended five-fold, leading to reduced operating costs.

Caterpillar’s industrial engines division has introduced a new version of its venerable C9.3 Acert engine. Badged the C9.3B, the new power unit retains its six-cylinder, 9.3litre format, but with the deletion of EGR, revised air handling, improved fuel injection and improved electronics, the engine is said to be ready to meet anticipated Stage V emissions regulations.

Engine manufacturer MTU, a division of Rolls Royce Power Systems, is offering an emissions flex package for new and used engines operating in countries where different emissions requirements and high sulphur diesel are in use. It enables exhaust after-treatment and SCR systems to be deactivated simply by software, rather than hardware changes, said the company.

Perkins’ industrial engine range has been extended upwards with the development of 9.3, 12.5, 15.2 and 18.1litre engines that are based on a worldwide platform enabling engine production to be structured to meet emissions regulations ranging from Stage 3A through to anticipated Stage V regulations.

TCD 5.0 is the name given to the latest engine from Deutz. The five-litre, four-cylinder engine fills a gap between the 4.1litre TCD 4.1 and 6.1litre TCD 6.1 engines. The new engine offers a power rating from 100-150kW but occupies the same physical size as the smaller capacity TCD 4.1.
