French transport minister Elisabeth Borne is considering a tax on new cars to boost funds for road maintenance, according to media reports. Media reports that the country, once the top-ranked country for the condition of its roads, has dropped to seventh place due to issues over maintenance leading to an increased risk to users.

Work on a new bridge crossing over the Rhine River is now commencing. The site of the bridge lies close to Leverkusen and the link will carry traffic for the A1 Autobahn route. A complex construction contract is being considered for Colombia’s capital, Bogota. Work is expected to commence for the Avenida Longitudinal de Occidente (ALO) south road project in 2019. This 24km dual carriageway link will be complex to construct as it will feature 46 bridges, as well as two intersections. Construction work is expected to cost in the region of US$336 million. Official approval has been given for construction of a new Western bypass around Krasnodar in Russia. The PPP project is expected to cost US$515.4 million and the new link will provide a connection with the M4 Don federal highway. However it is also recognised that the cost of the tolled highway project could increase. The bypass will feature two lanes in either direction and will measure close to 53km long. Included in the project will be the construction of three interchanges, four bridges and 10 overpass

Approval has been given for a new port tunnel connection project in Sri Lanka. The project will be carried out under the PPP model and will connect capital Colombo with Port City. The work will be carried out by with CHEC Port City Colombo, a subsidiary of China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC).

With the official go ahead being given for a new expressway in Poland’s southern Silesia Region, tendering can now commence. This last stretch of the S1 expressway will run from Bielsko-Biala to Zwardon and will measure 8.5km long. Tendering is now starting for the project, which is expected to cost in the region of €351.25 million and should take two years to build. This new road project forms part of the 2014-2023 National Road Construction Programme.
