VSS Macropaver is introducing an improved version of its successful slurry surfacing equipment, as well as upgraded variants of the mobile Minimac and skid-mounted emulsion plants. Vice president Doug Hogue said that the upgrades to the slurry surfacing machine will increase its performance as well as its ability to handle tough road repair jobs. Phoenix Industries, which specialises in products made from recycled rubber tyres, unveiled a new type of rubber pellet at Conexpo called PelletPAVE Plus, designed to allow less virgin asphalt to be used when preparing a mix. “This new product decreases the amount of asphalt you need in your mix by up to 0.5%,” said Serji Amirkhanian, director of research and development for Phoenix Industries. Amirkhanian has been researching the use of recycled rubber in asphalt mixes for more than 25 years.

Tweaks to Yanmar’s mini excavator range has seen the firm introduce a new 2.5tonne ViO model and offer an angle blade option on its larger 3.5tonne ViO35-6, to increase its versatility. Yanmar’s ViO25-6 is an all-new model aimed at landscape contractors and rental customers, defined by its 2.5tonne operating weight that makes the mini excavator trailer-friendly for transport, without needing a CDL or large goods vehicle driving licence, said the company.

US-based wear part specialist BLS Enterprises is broadening its product line with a new trackpad system. The firm’s president, Barry Stoughton, explained that the new product is designed for use with excavators, allowing them to be driven on an asphalt or concrete road without damaging the surface. “It’s rubber bonded to steel,” said Stoughton. “We use a triple grouser steel pad.”

A new, patented Aggregates Cooling System (ACS) was one of the main taking points on the stand of asphalt and concrete plant manufacturer Lintec at Conexpo. Lintec has just sold its first ever plant to concrete manufacturer Emirates Beton in Dubai. When mixing concrete in warm climates, aggregate has to be cooled in order to maintain the performance and quality of the finished product, explained Lintec managing director Carsten Weiss: “If you don’t cool it, you don’t get the strength at the end,” he said. “

Nylacast said that its improved self-lubricating plastic components are finding new markets in North America. The plastic parts suit duties in applications such as booms for cranes, access platforms and telehandlers. Because the material is self-lubricating, it offers long wear life in this type of installation and reduces maintenance needs and costs for the machine user.

Construction projects in North America are facing skills shortages in the near future, according to Jeff Nipper, managing director for Pilosio in Canada.
