Ray O’Connor, president and CEO of Topcon Positioning Systems, has been a busy man at bauma. As well announcing the release of the new DC61 PXi Komatsu bulldozer, the Topcon boss also found time to comment on world markets and talk up a number of the products on the company’s stand.

Rigid hauler manufacturer Perlini is setting up three new manufacturing businesses in China, Brazil and Russia, working with local partners to supply these growing markets. This is a new approach for the Italian family-run firm, which began setting up the new deals two years ago after a change in management. “Our old management was very conservative,” said managing director Maurizio Perlini. “But it was a case of go with partners or close the company. We did not have a choice.”

A group of senior executives from Caterpillar spoke to journalists in a round table discussion, providing insight into the company’s future direction. The new crawler version of Moog’s MBI 50 unit has been designed especially for operation on narrow pedestrian bridges. With the load distribution on two crawlers it is possible to stick to a minimum area load even though the overall width is 1.6m and the weight 3,000kg. This makes it possible to work on bridges that are rated low-weight only.

The newest addition to Ruthmann’s Height series offers flexible access in awkward situations thanks to its extended telescoping upper boom with moveable jib. Ruthmann’s Steiger T 720 truck-mounted access platform made its world debut at bauma. The model has a working height of up to 72m and maximum lateral reach of 38m.
