Key road projects in Poland look set to move forward. A tender process will commence shortly for a project in Lodz. Poland’s road authority, GDDKiA, will start the Western ring-road tender process. Poland's Infrastructure Ministry will give the go-ahead. The project involves building under 29km of the S14 dual carriageway to complete the circle around Lodz. A feasibility study is underway for the highway project to connect Colombia’s capital Bogota with the country’s second city, Medellin. The 427km route will be of major benefit to the country by cutting journey times between the two cities to around five hours. However the project looks likely to face serious challenges, particularly with regard to the topography of key sections of the route. STRABAG will handle the contract to widen Austria’s A1 highway in Austria between Matzleinsdorf and Pöchlarn. The €22 million contract involves widening to three lanes and has a scheduled completion date of May 2018. The contract also includes widening eight bridges along the 5.1km section. Construction work is now underway on the project.

Two men in the UK caused hilarity when loading their delivery truck in a less than efficient manner. In a misguided attempt to speed their work of loading the truck, the men loaded their pallet device with a huge and obviously heavy pile of crates. Perhaps not understanding the laws of motion, they then tried to load this into the truck using its tail-lift. Unsurprisingly, the tottering heap of crates fell over with a crash, shattering many of the glass bottles it contained.

A driver in Toronto thought she would stop to help when she spotted a family of geese, two adults and nine goslings, crossing a road. The parents were able to hop over the kerbside but some of the young goslings were too small to make the jump necessary. The woman stopped her car and rushed to the aid of the struggling goslings, trying to scoop them up and placing them safely on the pedestrian walkway. When a hot dog jumped through the window of a parked van in a bid to escape the uncomfortable heat, things could have ended badly for the pooch. As it exited through the window, the dog’s lead snagged on an obstruction, leaving the animal dangling and it soon fell into unconsciousness. However, a quick-thinking teenager passing by came to the rescue, unclipping the animal’s collar and it was able to recover quickly afterwards.

A driver in Kiev used a rather unusual technique to avoid a traffic jam. The driver reversed at high speed for several hundred metres along a busy dual carriageway, despite oncoming traffic. Almost miraculously, other vehicles managed to avoid crashing into the car. Once the vehicle reached an intersection, the driver was able to turn around and head off in another direction. A British man recently set a new speed record in a souped-up electric car. The highly modified vehicle hit 195km/h (122mph) in 9.86 seconds over a measured distance of 400m at the Santa Pod dragstrip in the UK. Built from an Enfield 8000 electric car, the performance showed a marked increase over the original design with its top speed of 64km/h. A motorcyclist in Thailand was spotted recently, riding his bike along a busy urban road while asleep. Video footage shot by the bemused occupant of another vehicle following showed the rider with his head canted sharply to one side as he rode along the street. Unsurprisingly, this unusual journey ended with the rider colliding with a number of items placed at the roadside.
