Delays are afflicting work on the Zaragoza-Caucasia road upgrade project in Colombia. The work was originally due for completion in December 2018 but is now being finished in the second quarter of 2019. Vandalism to 21 construction machines on the project are the prime cause for the delay. New security measures have been put in place to prevent a recurrence. Two major road tenders are opening for bids in Santa Catarina in Brazil during 2019. These will be for the BR-101/SC highway and BR-470/SC highway. The latter will involve a connection to an airport and is costing US$143 million to upgrade and widen the existing route.

Work has started on a 5km extension, including a 1.1kkm tunnel under the Weser River, to Germany’s A281 motorway. The project around the northwestern city of Bremen will connect the A281 with the A27 by 2024 and cost around €345 million. Bremen will contribute €1 million.

Construction work on the planned tunnel for the Polish islands of Uznam and Wolin will commence in 2021. The islands lie on Poland’s Baltic Coast and this €184 million tunnel project is intended to improve transport connections in the area. The ferries used at present are ageing and are no longer able to cope adequately with the number of vehicles using the crossing. Planning work is being carried out for a major interstate redesign project in Miami, Florida. The US$802 million project involves the redesign of I-395 and surveying activities are now commencing. A pre-feasibility study is being planned for Vietnam’s Hoa Binh-Moc Chau Expressway project. Construction of the expressway is expected to cost US$857.4 million, with the work being handled under the PPP model. The 85km is planned to feature two lanes in either direction. Construction of the expressway is expected to reduce journey times between Hanoi and Son La, close to the border with Laos, from six hours at present, to just 2.5 hours in the future.
