Germany’s A281 extension to include another Weser River tunnel

Work has started on a 5km extension, including a 1.1kkm tunnel under the Weser River, to Germany’s A281 motorway. The project around the northwestern city of Bremen will connect the A281 with the A27 by 2024 and cost around €345 million. Bremen will contribute €1 million.

Work has started on a 5km extension, including a 1.1kkm tunnel under the Weser River, to Germany’s A281 motorway.

The project around the northwestern city of Bremen will connect the A281 with the A27 by 2024 and cost around €345 million. Bremen will contribute €1 million.

The first part of the A281 was opened in 1995 and eases traffic congestion heading to Bremen Airport Hans Koschnick.

The existing Weser Tunnel runs from the villages of Rodenkirchen and Dedesdorf, offering a connection between the cities of Nordenham and Bremerhaven. It was opened in 2004 and provides access to the A 27 motorway and the B 212.

    The German Government has given the go-ahead for planning a new autobahn section in Bremen. The Ministry of Transport says that the work will be carried out to a section of the A281 autobahn that connects the A1 and the A27.     Sweden and Denmark are considering a fixed link between Helsingør and Helsingborg, either a a road, railway or road-rail. The link would cross The Øresund, a straight separating the two countries that is only 6.7km wide between the Danish city of Helsingør and the Swedish city of Helsingborg. Investigations, likely to cost around €2.3 million including €1 million from the European Union, will start this month with a final report by 2020.
