Ring road for Romania’s Bacau

A new ring road is being built around the city of Bacau in eastern Romania. The project is costing €144 million and will form a section of the Pan-European Corridor IX. The work is being carried out by local contractor UMB Spedition while the client is the National Company for the Administration of Road Infrastructure (CNAIR).
Second Tees Valley Viaduct proposed at Middlesbrough

Proposals for a second crossing over the Tees River in northern England have gone out to public consultation, according to media reports. The Tees Valley Combined Authority, the local authority, said there are two options to take the A19 trunk road over the River Tees at the city of Middlesbrough. Design contract for Irish motorway

The design contract for Ireland’s Cork to Limerick motorway connection has now been awarded. The design package is worth €15 million and is being handled jointly by Irish firm JB Barry Transportation, Swedish company Sweco and WSP based in Canada. Key sections of Indonesia’s important trans-Sumatra highway project are nearly ready for traffic. A 350km stretch that will connect with the city of Palembang should be open shortly. Meanwhile construction of the 141km Bakauheni to Terbanggi Bedar stretch is now starting, with this work being carried out by contractor Hutama Karya. New bridge crossing planned for Malaysia

A new bridge is to be built in Malaysia’s Sarawak State at a cost of US$112.5 million. The work will be carried out by a joint venture comprising the Chinese contractor China Communications Construction and local firm PPES Works, itself part owned by Cahya Mata Sarawak. The new bridge will measure 1,048m-long and will be a cable-stayed structure, carrying two lanes of traffic in either direction. Nepal bridge closes due to defect

The bridge spanning the Bijaypur River in Nepal has been closed to traffic due to serious structural problems. The bridge forms part of the Prithvi Highway and connects Bijaypur with Chauthe. Major cracks have been detected in structural members of the 74m-long steel girder bridge, which was erected in 2011. The bridge carries around 6,000 vehicles/day and repairs to the link are expected to take at least one month to complete. Kenya highway projects starting

Construction work is starting on two important road projects in Kenya. These are for the Dongo Kundu Southern Bypass and for the Mau Highway. The Mau highway project is worth US$2 billion and forms part of the route that links Kenya’s key port at Mombasa through its capital Nairobi to the border with neighbouring Uganda. New Turkish tunnel project being studied

A study is being carried out for a proposed combined use tunnel project in Turkey. The proposal is for a tunnel featuring three levels that would be able to handle both 75,000 passengers/hour by rail and 120,000 vehicles/day. The study should be complete during 2019, with a tender process expected soon after. Should the project go ahead, the build-operate-transfer model will be utilised.
Philippines expressway connector project under construction

Construction work is starting in the Philippines for the new link that will connect the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) and the South Luzon Expressway (SLEx). The project is costing nearly US$430 million, with the link being built by local toll road firm NLEX Corp. The new link road will be 8km long, running from the end of Harbor Link in Caloocan City to the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) in Santa Mesa of Manila. The road link will be elevated and the work is due for completion in 2021.
