New German tunnel project commencing

Construction work for a new tunnel stretch for the A44 route in Germany is now starting. The Boyneburg Tunnel section will measure 1.7km and forms part of the new A44 Autobahn, connecting the city of Kassel in central Germany with Herleshausen, where it links with the existing A4 route. The new tunnel section lies close to Wichsmannhausen while building the 70km stretch of the A44 is costing €1.7 billion.
New Russian bridge project planned

A new bridge is planned for Russia, which will span the Sheksna River in Cherepovets. The bridge will measure 1.13km in length and the project also involves building 7km of connecting roads. The bridge will be built in Russia’s Vologda Region and the work has a pricetag of nearly US$248 million. Because of the river traffic, the bridge will have to be built high enough to allow a clear passage for vessels underneath. Cambodia expressway project under construction

Construction is now underway on the expressway that will connect Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, with the country’s premier port, Sihanoukville. The expressway will stretch some 190km when complete and the project is expected to cost US$2 billion. The work is being carried out by the Chinese contractor, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC). The route is being built under the build-operate-transfer model and should take four years to complete.
Norway: narrow roads get big upgrade

The Norwegian government has set aside €2.6 million to improve narrow county roads and reinforce smaller bridges. The goal is to upgrade the assets to handle heavier logging trucks in an effort to reduce the number of vehicles and cut down on congestion and CO² emissions, said Jon Dale, minister of transport and communications. According to the government calculations, stronger bridges on narrow roads could reduce traffic by 25%.

Tendering for new Chile-Argentina tunnel project

The tender process is open for the study into the planned Paso Las Lenas tunnel to connect Chile and Argentina. The study is expected to cost US$1.55 million and will be paid for by Chile’s O’Higgins Region.
