ANAS draws more than €120mn of Italian road safety maintenance works tenders

Italian state-controlled road group ANAS has drawn a series of tenders worth over €120 million combined to improve road safety for extraordinary maintenance works on tunnels, bridges and viaducts on 25,000 kilometres of motorway and road network nationwide. One in 20 adults was involved in a road accident in the UK in 2012, according to road safety charity, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). Referring to information from the National Travel Survey (NTS) published by the Department for Transport (DfT), the IAM says the survey shows that 5.2% of the population admit to having been involved in an accident. Swindon, UK A419 solar panels to double-up as noise barriers

A popular road near in the UK county of Wiltshire may be soundproofed using solar panels which double-up as noise barriers. Swindon Borough Council leaders are creating a working group to explore the idea of installing the panels along the A419 dual carriageway near Swindon. The electricity generated is set to fund the scheme, possibly the first of its kind in Britain and targeted for completion within two years. Parts of the A419 already have standard noise barriers, with solar panels expected to cost €1.1
Costain lands major A160 UK road contract

Costain has won an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract to improve the A160, from the junction with the A180 at Brocklesby Interchange to the Port of Immingham, near Grimsby, north Lincolnshire, England. Road marking manufacturers have many innovative new products either currently being used on major highways or set to be made available within the next couple of years. Guy Woodford reports. Daan Roosegaarde, an artist, and Hans Goris, a manager at Dutch construction and infrastructure firm Heijmans, are developing intriguing new products for the road markings market. One innovation involves painting road markings with glow-in-the-dark paint.
Novel transition system for use between steel to concrete barriers

German firm PASS+CO has developed a novel product that can be used as a transition between steel and concrete barriers. Called the FLEXTRA SR-C, this product meets the European H2 rating under the EN1317 and connects the firm’s own SUPER-RAIL H4b double barrier with concrete structures. This can be installed in an array of applications, such as at the entrance to tunnels or tolling areas, where there is a need for a transition from one type of barrier to another.
