Morocco is planning to upgrade and widen several of its major road links during 2016. The aim of the works will be to boost capacity as well as to improve stretches of road that suffer from regular flooding or which have an unacceptably high rate of crashes. In all around 825km of roads will be improved by the programme of works, while there are also plans to improve 16 bridges.

Slovakia has opened the 9.5km Levoca bypass, nearly completing the northern part of the D1 cross-country motorway. The remaining section between Bratislava and Kosice is expected to be open around 2020, with the Zilina, Presov and Ruzomberok bypasses yet to be built. Research in the UK reveals drivers most at risk of poor driving are male and aged 26-35. The study suggests men in their late 20s and early 30s are the biggest culprits with regard to bad driving. The research was compiled by technology firm ASUS and found that men aged 26-35 account for 28% of all driving bans in the UK, more than any other age group. The research also said that 93,952 licence holders were disqualified from driving in the last 12 months in the UK.

A new highway project is being planned that will help boost the economy of Mali. The landlocked country is one of the most impoverished nations in Africa and this new highway will provide a direct link from its capital Bamako to the port of San Pedro in Côte d'Ivoire. Much of the financing for the project is being provided through a loan worth US$ 187.61 million from the African Development Bank. Topcon Positioning is establishing a collaboration with DAQRI to develop wearable safety technology for use on construction sites. The two firms will work together to develop technology that will boost safety for site personnel through the use of augmented reality systems. DAQRI is a leader in enterprise augmented reality and developed the Smart Helmet, an industrial-grade unit that seamlessly connects personnel to work environments by providing information about the surroundings.

Uzbekistan is setting out a major plan for road repairing, rebuilding and upgrading. The Uzbek Road Fund is allocating a budget of US$1.02 billion that will be used for the construction and repair of the country’s roads during 2016. Of this budget the largest slice, $544 million, will be used to construct key national routes and improve the country’s links with its neighbours.
