Slovakia opens Levoca bypass of D1 motorway section

Slovakia has opened the 9.5km Levoca bypass, nearly completing the northern part of the D1 cross-country motorway. The remaining section between Bratislava and Kosice is expected to be open around 2020, with the Zilina, Presov and Ruzomberok bypasses yet to be built. Slovakia has opened the 9.5km Levoca bypass, nearly completing the northern part of the D1 cross-country motorway. The remaining section between Bratislava and Kosice is expected to be open around 2020, with the Zilina, Presov and Ruzomberok bypasses yet to be built.

The newly opened section of Janovce - Jablonov II includes the 600m tunnel Sibenik, as well as a slip road to Levoca and 12 road bridges.

Construction works on the D1 section started in June 2012 by the consortium of 3281 Eurovia and Stavby Mostov Slovakia. The cost is around €126 million, with the majority funded by European Union subsidies.

In June, 7808 Slovakian National Motorway Company NDS put out to tender two sections of the D1 near Presov and Kosice. Both tenders were published in the Official Journal of the European Union, with bid submission deadlines set for June 29.

The first section is the south-west D1 by-pass of Presov at nearly 8km long, including the construction of a 2km dual-tube road tunnel Presov and estimated to cost €443.4 million. The second section is the 14.5km Budimir to Bidovce stretch, with costs estimated at nearly €251.3 million.

Meanwhile, the government recently approved a €109 million reallocation to road construction.

    Bidding is strong for the works to construct two bypasses in Slovakia. The road links are the 14.5km long northern Kosice bypass and the 8km Presov bypass. Both bypasses form part of the D1 motorway. The estimated value of both projects is nearly €580 million.
