The UK’s Humber Bridge gets protected status

Any refurbishments to the Humber Bridge near the northern English city of Hull will be subject to intense scrutiny after being designated a historic site. Kenya connection under construction

Construction work is underway on the road improvement project between Kenya’s premier port of Mombasa and the town of Mariakani. The project will see the A109 route being widened and upgraded and is costing nearly US$59 million. Ghana building three new bridges

Plans are being drawn up in Ghana for the construction of three new bridges in the north of the country. In all the construction work will cost US$100 million and is being carried out in Ghana’s Northern Region. Two bridges will span the tributary of the Volta River, the White Volta, and will be built at Daboya and Yapeim close to the northern city of Tamale. The third bridge will be constructed at Buipe and will span another tributary of the Volta River, the Black Volta.

Angola road projects are being awarded

In Angola’s capital Luanda, three key road projects have now been awarded, with the work intended to help improve urban traffic flow and cut congestion at peak periods. One project will be carried out by the Chinese contractor China Railway 20 Group International. China’s infrastructure development for Anhui and Jiangsu Provinces

China’s Anhui and Jiangsu Provinces are developing transport infrastructure with a series of major projects. In Anhui Province plans have been drawn up for road and highway improvements as well as upgrades to other categories of transport infrastructure over the period from 2017 to 2021. The road expansion programme will see Anhui Province increase its highway network by 1,157km to 5,700km during this period.

Congestion is particularly bad on the road from the city centre to Juan Álvarez international airport. Jams are frequent on the section of road between Acapulco Bay and the Diamante and Puerto Marques suburbs, which currently means climbing La Escénica. EU funds set for renovation of the Karawanks Tunnel

The European Commission will provide €25 million for renovation of the 7.8k-long Karawanks Tunnel, a motorway link between Austria and Slovenia. The Karawanks is a 120km-long mountain range between Slovenia to the south and Austria to the north. Around €6.5 million will go towards planning and €18 million will be set aside for reconstruction.

Krasnodar bypass project being planned

A new bypass project is being planned for Krasnodar in Russia. Building work for the Krasnodar’s North-West Bypass is expected to commence in 2018. The 57km bypass project includes building two overpasses and seven interchanges. Construction of this new bypass will join the M4 Don highway with the Yeyskoye Highway and the Krasnodar-Temryuk-Bely route. The project is costing US$430.6 million and forms part of a wider plan to improve connectivity around the Black Sea.

Pakistan highway project due for completion

A new six lane highway connection in Pakistan is expected to be complete in 36 months. A Chinese firm, China State Construction Engineering, is to handle the project for the 393km highway, which runs from Sukkur to Multan. Financing for the project is being provided by the Chinese Government and the work is expected to cost close to US$2.8 billion in all. Cambodia’s new highway project being planned

Cambodia is hoping to start work on a new expressway running from capital Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville in late 2017. The 190km expressway is expected to cost in excess of US$1.5 billion and the project has been planned by Cambodia’s Ministry of Public Works and Transport. Once the new expressway is complete, it will improve transport and reduce journey times along the route between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, while also improving safety for road users.
