Japan loans will finance Cambodia highway upgrade

Loans from Japan to Cambodia will help finance work on a key highway upgrade. The loan package totals US$150 million and will be used for the project to upgrade Cambodia’s National Road No 5. This major route runs from Poipet city, through Banteay Meanchey to Phnom Penh. The loan was announced by HE Shinzo Abe, Japan’s prime minister in a meeting with Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, the prime minister of Cambodia. The meeting was held at the recent 27th ASEAN Summit in Malaysia.

    Plans are being made in Cambodia for a new tolled highway connecting Phnom Penh with the Vietnamese border at Bavet.     Cambodia is continuing with the construction of a key highway project. Work is now underway on building National Road No58. The project has been by a number of Chinese companies, which are investing some US$122 million into the 174km road.     Cambodia is hoping to start work on a new expressway running from capital Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville in late 2017. The 190km expressway is expected to cost in excess of US$1.5 billion and the project has been planned by Cambodia’s Ministry of Public Works and Transport.
