Chile planning road repairs

Chile's Ministry of Public Works (MOP) will re-open highway concessions worth over US$1 billion shortly.

906 Chile's Ministry of Public Works (MOP) will re-open highway concessions worth over US$1 billion shortly. Amongst these will be new tenders for work to repair roads shattered by the recent earthquake, as well as projects that were halted. These last include the $200 million Coquimbo road network, the $189 million Iquique alternative road access scheme, the $304 million Concepcion-Cabrero highway and the $296 million La Serena-Vallenar link.

    Strong bids have been received for Chile’s Puente Industrial road bridge project, which will be built in Region VIII. Bidders included Spanish firm OHL as well as Besalco Concesiones-Concesiones Viarias Chile Tres and Sacyr Concesiones Chile. Work on the 2.5km bridge is expected to commence in 2014 and the project will cost some US$170 million to construct, with completion expected in 2017.     Plans for a cross-continent upgraded road were recently boosted when Chile’s senate approved construction of its share of a major US$1.6 billion tunnel in the Andes Mountains.
