A new generation 1194 Vögele SUPER 1303-3i paver has been used to revamp roadways for Germany’s historic Ludwigsburg Palace grounds. The wheeled machine was used to lay coloured asphalt for the entrance area to the palace grounds. The surface quality had to meet tough requirements so as to blend with the historic location.

The palace is used for state receptions and cultural events and the extensive grounds are open to the public. A number of pavement rehabilitation measures were recently implemented in the south gardens of the park. These included the redesign of the entrance area and rehabilitation of the footpaths with coloured asphalt.

A manoeuvrable SUPER 1303-3i wheeled compact class paver was selected to carry out the work. Equipped with the latest AB340TV extending screed, the machine suits duties on small urban roads, service roads, combined foot and cycle paths and small to medium-sized areas.
Contractors Gottlob Brodbeck carried out the work under the supervision of site manager Michael Schifer. Foreman Jernail Sing commented, “The most important factor for us in this project was that the screed worked perfectly and ensured maximum evenness. This is crucial as coloured asphalt is a very unforgiving material.”

However, the required evenness of +/- 3mm over a longitudinal distance of 3m was delivered to specification, as was the crown with a 2%.
