A major revamp of the winding Rue René Cassin road in France will help boost traffic capacity and safety. One key section runs through the small town of La Voulte-sur-Rhône but traffic on the Rue René Cassin is heavy and the surface course had to be rehabilitated quickly in order to minimise the nuisance to both commuters and tourists.

The paving team from contractor Groupe Cheval opted to use its powerful and compact 1194 Vögele SUPER 1800-3i paver for the job, with the machine proving both productive and capable of delivering a quality surface. The project requirements called for every aspect of the work to proceed smoothly and without breaks, despite continuing traffic flow. This need for continuous working is common in town centre road construction projects such as the one for La Voulte-sur-Rhône. It requires a continuous supply of material as well as a manoeuvrable paver that can cope with narrow sections of road and tight curves, as well being able to pave straight sections, squares and roundabouts.

For the "Dash 3" generation, the VÖGELE ErgoPlus operating system has been supplemented by numerous technical and functional features. For Groupe Cheval, ErgoPlus 3 was a key reason that had prompted the firm to purchase two SUPER 1800-3i pavers from Vögele. One of these machines was used on the job and its performance was noted by the paver operator and screed operator, as well as the driver of the feed lorry when rehabilitating the surface course of the winding road. The optimised ErgoPlus 3 operating concept is said to allow more intuitive control, while the design of the paver is said to provide all-round visibility to all the key working areas. The operator’s console has the functions located in logical groups, with a high-contrast colour display that is said to be easy to read even in poor lighting. Another important control is the SmartWheel, which gives infinite and precise screed width control and can take account of changes in the routing of the road, such as where the route narrows, along walls or kerbs.

The PaveDock Assistant system also simplifies the transfer of material from lorry to paver, providing better communications using simple coloured signal lights that can easily be seen by the truck driver. These allow the paver operator to indicate to the truck driver whether to reverse, dock, stop, raise dump box, lower dump box and move away. This does away with the need for a member of the team to guide the truck in and also prevents possible miscommunications or delays in responses.

Road construction work with moving traffic always represents a major challenge. This is especially true when only one lane can be closed, consequently leaving little space for working and manoeuvring. That was exactly the case for a rehabilitation project on the A2 motorway in Austria between Vienna and Graz near Schäffern. However, the job was further complicated by another factor: all access roads to the job site were roughly 1km apart. Ensuring an uninterrupted supply of mix to the paver under these
