Tendering is commencing for the final portion of works to complete Colombia’s La Linea tunnel project. Around 12% of the work on the tunnel still has to be completed, with the work expected to cost US$68.5 million. The tender is being carried out by Colombia's National Road Institute (2812 Invias). The tunnel project has been delayed for a series of reasons. Colombian contractor Constructora Carlos Collins was constructing the tunnel but did not meet the necessary deadline. As a result, Invias opted to open the tender for the final portion of works required. The project timeline now calls for the tunnel to open to traffic by mid-2018.

When the tunnel finally opens to traffic, it will provide a much safer route for drivers, as well as cutting journey times. The existing road is at a comparatively high altitude and is narrow and twisty with has a poor record for safety, particularly in bad weather. The new tunnel route will offer extra capacity as well as cutting journey times and boosting safety standards.
