A new average-speed camera, which can measure driving speeds over several kilometres, will be installed near Besançon. By late 2012, roughly 20 cameras will be installed in France. Similar systems exist in Italy, the UK and Netherlands. Over a stretch of two kilometres with a 70km/h speed limit, drivers are monitored twice.

Undersecretary of the Hungarian Ministry of National Development (NFM) responsible for infrastructure, Pal Volner, has revealed that renovations on more than 1,200kms of roads in Hungary will be completed by the end of 2014. The works, in line with the country's New Szechenyi Plan (USZT), will cost €372.77 million (HUF 104bn).

Work has begun on the Long Van-Long My road in Vietnam's Binh Dinh province. The US $47.71 million project (VND 995bn), due for completion in 2015, will create a 7km road connecting National Highways 1D and 1A in Quy Nhon town.

Turkish company Cengiz Insaat has reportedly been awarded the €115 million contract for the construction of the Suhodol-Tarcin motorway in Bosnia. The works, which will be done in cooperation with Bosnian company Euroasfalt, will include two tunnels. One of the will be 400m long, while the other will be 2.5km. Works are expected to be completed by 2014.

Director of the Bosnian motorways company Autoceste FBiH, Ensad Karic, said the federal government of Bosnia and Herzegovina had approved the increase, which will be effective from 13 June, 2013. Prices for personal vehicles on the Sarajevo-Zenica 37km motorway will increase from BAM 2 to BAM 4.20 (US$2.68).

Fatal road accident deaths fell by 7.1% to around 3,800 in 2011, according to official data provided by Istat and ACI. There were 205,000 road accidents involving injuries in Italy last year, a drop of 3%. The Italian rate of 63 fatalities per million people was just above EU average for 2011, while the number of fatalities out of 100 accidents increased on motorways from 3.1 in 2010 to 3.2 in 2011,

The German province of Baden- Württemberg has issued a list of 20 ready to be built federal trunk road projects worth a combined US$1.01billion (€800mn).The first five could be started in 2014 and the next five in 2015 or 2016.
