A 70 year-old driver from New York in the US has clocked record distances in his 1966 vintage Volvo. Owned from new the Volvo P1800 has clocked an incredible 4.8 million km (3 million miles). The man is an enthusiastic driver covering anything from 96,000-160,000km/year (60,000-100,000 miles/year) and not only in the US, but also in Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Sweden and the UK.

A moped rider in the US state of South Carolina was the victim of a rather unusual attack. He was riding the vehicle when another man pushed him off the moped. As the victim fell to the ground, the attacker then grabbed the victim’s prosthetic leg and used this as a weapon with which to continue the assault. The attacker was arrested and charged for the assault although the reason for the incident has not been revealed.

A Canadian man in Alberta is thought to have set a world record for the flimsiest excuse for speeding. Canadian Mounties spotted the man driving at 180km/h and when they managed to stop him, he explained he was in the process of drying his car, as it had been washed shortly beforehand. His driving licence was suspended for 45 days while he was fined C$800.

The Victoria state government in Australia is planning to build Melbourne’s East West Link road costing US$5.64 billion (AUD 6 billion) to $7.53 billion (AUD 8 billion) on public-private partnership (PPP) basis and will award construction deals by the end of 2013. A fully functioning submarine car has been offered for sale. The car, which features the composite bodywork from a Lotus Esprit, was built for the 1977 James Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me. The car is said to have cost $100,000 to convert into a submarine with the work being carried out by a specialist company in Florida and was used in extended underwater sequences in the film. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen) plans to invest €10 billion (NOK 80 billion) in road building and tunnel upgrades from 2014-17, according to its new investment plan for the period. A further another €2.87 billion (NOK 23 billion) will be spent on pedestrian and cyclist safety measures. The construction of a 74km road between Caracollo and Confital in Bolivia will cost around US$177 million, the country’s vice-president Alvaro Garcia Linera has revealed. The contract for the project has been put out to tender. Companies have until 8 November 2013 to submit their proposals. The contract will be signed on 23 December 2013.

Road weight restrictions are not always adhered to in some countries

The US$396 million upgrade of the Tumba Muerto-Via Israel road in Panama City, including four flyovers and four tunnels to alleviate traffic jams, is expected to be completed by the end of December 2013.
