New Izhevsk Bridge project in Russia

A new bridge project is planned for Izhevsk in Russia. The bridge will span the Kama River and is expected to cost US$438 million to construct. The contractor VTB is one of the firms that will be involved in the construction of the crossing. In addition VTB is also looking to build a bridge spanning the Lena River as well as a section of the high speed highway that will link Russia’s major conurbations of Moscow and St Petersburg. This last contract looks likely to be awarded in the second quarter of 2014.

A recent Pan-European police operation to enforce laws on speeding has yielded major success. Over 720,000 drivers were detected breaking speed limits in the operation, which was co-orcinated by the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL) in 28 countries. Of the 728,268 detections, 274,355 were made directly by police officers and 453,913 came from automatic speed detectors. Stopping drivers for speeding offences also provides police officers with the opportunity to make other safety and security checks. D
Bosporus bridges at Istanbul being upgraded

A series of upgrades are planned for the two bridges crossing the Bosporus at Istanbul. A series of structural renovation works will be carried out. The work is due for completion in 2014 and includes the replacement of 236 cable sections. The tender for the work is now open to entrants although it has been closed to consortia.

A motorcyclist in the US made a rather foolish error when showing off his wheelie skills. The car in front stopped and as the rider had being paying insufficient attention to the road ahead he rammed straight into the rear of the vehicle. Worse still, the car was a police vehicle and its occupants were none too impressed with the rider’s behaviour, booking him immediately for the offence even as he lay sprawled on the ground recovering from the impact.
