Belgium takes Case Rodeo prizes

Sebastien Pirlet, from Belgium, triumphed in the 2013 Case Rodeo operator competition. An incredible group of skilled operators from 13 countries took part in the European Final, having already won their respective national competitions. This included the competition’s first female Swedish operator, Lise Lott Jansson. All of the competitors attending the event, which was held at the Case Customer Centre at Monthyon near Paris, were put through four tests of ultimate machine control and precision operating.

Isle of Wight road stability scheme ‘first’ at Niton’s Undercliff

John Peck Construction has been awarded the contract to carry out the first major road stability scheme at Niton’s Undercliff on the Isle of Wight, England’s largest island. This project is part of a major programme of special geotechnical schemes being delivered by Island Roads (made up of VINCI Concessions, Meridiam Infrastructure and Ringway) under the Highways PFI to maintain the highway at locations prone to ground movement.

Versatility and high performance are key features of the new SP84i slipform paver from Wirtgen. The machinie runs on four steerable crawler tracks and features its mould fitted between the crawler tracks. With a power output of 180kW, the machine can use electric and hydraulic vibration to pave roadways and surfaces and concrete can be selectively distributed by the spreading plough or spreading auger. TRL assist Highways Agency with UK motorway hole investigation

Netherlands transport sector retirements to leave thousands of empty roles

The Netherlands’ transport sector is expected to see thousands of empty positions as the ageing of the population causes a large number of retirements, according to the Dutch benefits issuing agency UWV. The total number of jobs is expected to increase by 5,000 until 2018, but an additional 36,000 positions will become free each year from 2015 onwards which is 11,000 more per year than the levels of 2013. India’s transport sector budget to fall by 18% in 2014/2015

The Indian government has announced an 18% cut in transport sector spending in the 2014/2015 fiscal year. However, the government will allocate a higher proportion of the sector’s budget to complete transport projects in India’s north eastern states. Meanwhile, vehicle producers are giving discounts to boost India sales due to oversupply in the sector.

Japan ODA cash for Vietnam’s Tan Vu-Lach Huyen Bridge

Work has begun on the Tan Vu-Lach Huyen Bridge located in Hai Phong, a northern port city of Vietnam. The 5.4km long and 16m wide bridge is expected to be completed by early-2017. The structure’s total construction cost combined with the cost of a 10km road leading to it will be US$562.28 million (VND 11.85 trillion).

New 125km road for Spain’s Meseta area

A new €1.2 billion, 125km road is earmarked for the Meseta (inner plateau) area of Spain. The new A-76 highway will run between Ourense, Monforte and Ponferrada. Those behind the project say it will not affect protected geographic areas. The new highway will join the recently opened Autovia del Cantabrico (A-8) which took ten years to complete.
