Paraguay’s Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) will award a series of road projects worth around US$1.3 billion in early 2016. These project include work on the first section of the bi-oceanic corridor, the reconstruction of Route 9, the expansion of Routes 2 and 7 and the second bridge connecting Paraguay with Brazil. The China Communications Construction Company is to take part in the second and third construction phases of Tehran’s north highway project. A memorandum of understanding signed earlier this year marks the first time a Chinese contractor has worked in Iran. The second section covers around 23km and includes a 6.5km tunnel and a 16.5km highway. The third section spans about 45km, of which 38km will be through tunnels. Total cost is around US$2 billion, with the second section costing $500 million.

Highways England has met suppliers and stakeholders to discuss how it will spend more than €2.7 billion to improve roads across the East of England region in the next six years. The work is part of the government’s Road Investment Strategy to triple levels of spending on England’s roads by the end of the decade. Plans include major improvements on the M11, A5 and M1, A1(M), A12, A14, A47 and A428. Roads minister Andrew Jones said the investment is the largest in a generation.

Uzbekistan plans to build around 2,700km of roads by 2019 at a cost of around US$590 million. Around 2,280km will have a bituminous concrete surface and 418km will be a concrete surface. Planning is in hand for the construction of Russia’s Silk Route's section. The Silk Road project is intended to connect China with Europe by road. Tunisia’s Ministry for Infrastructure, Housing and Coastal Development has a substantial budget set out for its road development programme. This schedule of works will be for the 2016-2020 period with some US$3.9 billion directed at road expansion and upgrade work. Of this budget, around $ 661 million will be spent on major highways and $712 million for major trunk roads. Two large highway projects in India are now moving forward following the award of contracts by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The NHAI awarded a contract worth US$269.62 million to Hindustan Construction Co (HCC) for the construction of a highway in the local state of Jammu and Kashmir. The project is part of the second stage of the National Highways Development Project (NHDP) initiative by the NHAI for the NH 1A highway, and covers 36km including 3km of tunnels between Banihal and Ramban.

A new bridge is planned for St Petersburg. The link will span the Neva River and will form part of the Western High-Speed Radius route. The project is expected to cost US$2.26 billion. Germany has a massive backlog of works required on its high speed road network. A report by Germany’s institute for economic research (DIW) says that the backlog of work for the transportation network corresponds will cost in the region of €80 billion to €100 billion to complete. According to the DIW report, around 50% of Autobahn bridges and 20% of Autobahn routes are in a critical state.
