The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has issued a draft request for proposals (RFP) for the US$2.1 billion Interstate 66 tolled expansion project. Work under a 40-50-year public-private partnership is expected to include construction of 46km of lanes.

A large red inflatable ball that was part of an art exhibit at a museum in Toledo, Ohio was blown away by the wind recently. This saw the 4.6m diameter inflatable bouncing down the road and over several vehicles, with attendants from the museum in hot pursuit.

A motorcyclist in India found out exactly why it is advisable not to use a cellphone while topping up fuel at a filling station. The man stopped to fill the tank of his motorcycle, then rested the phone on the bike. A huge flame suddenly appeared, setting the rider and his bike alight. Luckily however an attendant was near at hand, quickly coming to the aid of the rider. The motorcyclist also had the good sense to move his bike away from the pumps, preventing the fire from spreading.

A large budget has been set by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai. Contracts worth US$131.22 million have been awarded for a series of road, bridge, crossing and tunnel upgrades.

Road safety is improving in the UAE according to official data. The latest statistics from the Traffic Coordination General at the Interior Ministry of the UAE show reductions in deaths and injuries caused by road crashes in the January to October 2015 period. The US$644 million South Road upgrade in Adelaide will be 1km longer than planned following cost savings measures, according to a report by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Much of the savings were gained through design improvements and fewer relocations of services such as gas, water and electricity. The Ministry of Infrastructure has boosted its budget for 2016 to US$1.65 billion, an increase of $60.2 million over last year. According to a report by La Prenza, road projects include renovation of around 69km of the Tegucigalpa-Catacamas route and continuation of the San Francisco de la Paz-Puerto Castilla road.
