A day of road safety is planned for Europe this September, with the aim of having zero road fatalities. Called EDWARD, the first European day without road deaths is on Wednesday September 21st. The day is being organised by Pan-European police body TISPOL along with the European Commission and various other road safety bodies. It involves all 28 EC countries, as well as Norway and Switzerland and forms part of a plan to reduce road deaths in Europe. The target has been to halve road deaths in Europe by 2020

Tunisia is working on a series of major new highway connections. The new highway connecting Bou Salem with Beja and Oued Zarga should be ready for traffic in the third quarter of 2016. This will provide a highway link all the way from capital Tunis to Bou Salem, as the A3 previously stopped at Oued Zarga. Construction work on a 130km section of highway is being carried out at present in Ethiopia. The stretch runs between the towns of Awash and the city of Adama, which lie to the east of capital Addis Ababa. The new section of road being built will form part of the highway from Adama to Dire Dewa. The US$544 million project is being managed by the Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA). A Taiwanese artist has a ready answer for drivers who continue to use the phone while at the wheel. The man built a car using 25,000 cellphones. The project cost the artist US$30,000 to construct and took a number of years to create. He travelled worldwide while collecting old and discarded phones.

A Chinese woman won praise from her compatriots for guarding manholes without covers during recent flooding in the city of Jinjiang. The covers of the manholes had been moved out of place by the action of the flood waters, leaving a serious hazard. However despite the flood, the local woman stayed on hand to warn pedestrians, cyclists, motor cyclists and car drivers that the covers were missing. She placed umbrellas in some of the gaps as well as a warning notice in another.

A British man who managed to evade being caught for a number of driving offences over several years is now counting the cost. He had amassed a series of speeding offences in various high-end vehicles. In one incident he could be clearly seen in a speed camera image, making an obscene gesture at the camera. But each time the man was sent a letter informing him of an offence for which he would be prosecuted, he invented a fictitious name and personal details and claimed the person was living at one of the var

A driver in Belarus faced an unusual road hazard recently. The driver was passing through a rain-soaked village close to capital Minsk when a pedestrian suddenly stepped into the roadway and began a series of physical contortions. Luckily the driver had been travelling slowly due to the inclement weather conditions and was able to bring the vehicle to a rapid halt. A worker in the UK recently finished his shift, only to find that his car had been wrapped in clingfilm. The man had to spend several minutes cutting his car free before he could drive home and was decidedly unimpressed by the prank. It has yet to be revealed whether he has responded in kind with his own prank.
