Mega project of “extreme beauty” receives top award from the IRF, writes Patrick Smith The Sheikh Zayed Bridge, which was constructed for the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City, has won the Global Road Achievement Award in the design category from the International Road Federation (IRF). The 2011 Global Road Achievement Awards (GRAA) programme is a worldwide contest held to identify and honour excellence, innovation and exceptional achievements in 12 key categories in the transport and infrastructure industry.
Sri Lanka plans elevated links

The Sri Lankan Government is setting out plans to build three elevated highways to reduce traffic congestion in capital Colombo. The highways will be built in the Metropolitan Area and will provide access to the new Southern Expressway, the Outer Circular Highway and the Colombo -Katunayake Expressway under construction.
New bridge link for Tanzania

A new bridge costing over US$136 million will improve transport links in Tanzania. The 680m cable-stayed bridge will be built by China Major Bridge Engineering Company (CMBE) and Chinese Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG).
Vietnam needs bridge and road improvements

A key need for infrastructure upgrades is required in Vietnam during 2012. Official estimates suggest that some US$499.4 million is required to repair roads and upgrade or replace bridge links in the country. The Directorate for Roads of Vietnam says that there are 277 ageing bridges which need repairs and the country’s Transport Ministry has been urged to prioritise the issue.
Flexible under-bridge inspection unit

Barin has exported its ABC 60/L skid unit machine to Brazil for use in bridge inspections in the South American country. The machine, which has an under bridge working length of 6m, has been mounted on a two-axle Iveco Daily 70C16 truck chassis by a Barin technician based in Brazil. Turkish birdge/highway concession package reopens?

Despite the recent failure of the Turkish Government’s tender for the project to build a third bridge over the Bosphorus, the deal may yet go ahead. Japanese firms Itochu, Obayashi, IHI and Mitsubishi have revealed that they are still interested in constructing a third bridge over the Bosphorus at Istanbul, as well as constructing the associated tolled highway.

A new US$350 million road project by the Israel National Roads Company will boost connectivity from the north to the centre of the country. The project is seeing the opening of new interchanges and roads in western Galilee.
Urgent repairs to Forth Rd bridge

Urgent repairs will continue on the Forth Road Bridge in east central Scotland this weekend after work the previous weekend was disrupted by strong winds. The bridge authority has also confirmed that a further three weekends of traffic restrictions will be required over the following weeks. On Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 March traffic will be restricted to a single lane in each direction from 3am until 12noon.
