Work is due for completion shortly on Nairobi’s Southern Bypass, with an official inauguration being planned. The 28.6km highway has been constructed by Chinese contractor China Road and Bridge. The project has been required in a bid to tackle Nairobi’s chronic congestion problem. The city suffers heavily from traffic delays at peak periods.

Proposals have been put forward for a new tolled highway running around the US city of Lafayette. The project is expected to cost from US$1 billion to $1.3 billion, depending on which route is selected. One proposed route is 43km long while the other measures nearly 58km. However the contractor tasked with the construction work, Grupo Ferrovial, is hoping to be able to make up time and start work in January 2017. A major rebuilding project is now planned for a key link in India. The work will be carried out on the Mahatma Gandhi Setu Bridge, which spans the famous River Ganges. Measuring nearly 5.6km, this is the longest river crossing in India and had its official inauguration in 1982. Work is progressing on an important toll road project in Indonesia that will link Bogor, Sukabumi and Ciawi in West Java. The construction work is being carried out by Trans Jabar Tol, a subsidiary of state-owned firm Waskita Karya.
