Swarco Traffic launches Profectus to control school signs

Traffic technology specialist Swarco has launched Profectus, a system that allows local authorities to monitor and control the performance of school signs to improve safety. From a simple web browser interface, users can see when a sign is operating, check faults and change configuration for the master and slave signs. Fault notifications including failed LED displays can be sent via SMS or email; this reduces the possibility of a failed sign going unnoticed and potentially putting children’s lives at risk
Maintaining Canadian roads in tough conditions

A number of units from the FAE Group are playing an important role in Canada, helping to maintain dirt and gravel roads. The MTH units are said to be performing well, despite the tough conditions, with hot weather in the summer and extremely low temperatures in winter. The units are being employed by Rural Municipality Wilton, a company that specialises in maintaining dirt and gravel roads. The company has a fleet of 130 machines that operate and maintain 700km of roads.

A quarry producer in Iceland is now benefiting from new technology from Volvo CE. The firm is quarrying volcanic basalt at a site not far from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik. Located around 10km to the south of Reykjavik, just outside the small town of Hafnarfjörður, is a large open quarry called Vatnsskarðsnámur.

The laser-based measurement system is able to determine the volume of bulk materials such as sand and crushed stones with high accuracy. This can be used to prevent differences in loads from one truck to another, so as to ensure consistency. The system also identifies truck license plates and the load area, providing comprehensive data collation.

West Sussex County Council in the UK, in partnership with Balfour Beatty Living Places, is trialling a drone with a slight difference for bridge inspections – it floats. The floatable drone is at work on two bridges - Swan Bridge in Pulborough and Adur Ferry Bridge in Shoreham-By-Sea - saving around €9,230 over the cost of traditional inspections, according to the council and Balfour Beatty.Routine inspections are carried out on all bridges every two years.
