Italian technology company Outset has introduced two additional on-board weighing systems. The Lanx WL is a wireless control unit designed for use on road-going tipper trucks. It provides a real-time display of the net, gross, trailer and tractor axle weights, with an acoustic alarm to prevent overloading. The Lanx HD is intended for use in rigid dump trucks, and is directly installed in the cab. It displays the weight on board, allowing readings for each axle, and memorise round-trips for later download.

One company at INTERMAT probably deserves ‘ten stars’ for safer cost-effective construction machine operator training. Established in 2009, Swedish firm Tenstar Simulation (TS) offers simulator training programs for new operators of a wide spectrum of construction machines, including wheel and truck excavators, wheel loaders, and tower and lorry cranes.

French manufacturer Haulotte has reported sales of €89m in the first quarter of 2012, compared with €72.1m for the same period last year. Equipment sales were up 28.4% and represent 78.5% of total revenue, while service and rental revenues rose by 2% and 14.1% respectively. “Overall we see a pretty good market around the world in 2012,” said chief executive Alexandre Saubot. “I am still concerned by Europe, which will have the slowest growth this year. Ihimer, the joint venture between Japanese company IHI and Italian firm Imer, has added two skid steer loaders to its growing range of compact equipment. The AS30 and AS34 have operating weights of 3,150kg and 3,500kg respectively, with rated working loads of 850kg and 1,020kg. Power comes from a 50kW Kubota engine in the smaller machine and a 61kW Yanmar motor in the AS34. Chemical company Evonik has formulated an additive pack that creates multi-grade hydraulic oil for excavators. It is said to deliver a significant improvement in fuel efficiency compared to traditional mono-grade hydraulic oils. It’s called Dynavis and the key, said Evonik, is a clever viscosity improver that prevents aeration, which can cause cavitation and a loss of performance in hydraulic pumps. Kobelco used INTERMAT for the European introduction of its G series CKE range of crawler cranes –displaying the CKE2500G and the CKE800G, with lifting capacities of 250tonnes and 80tonnes respectively. ENH may operate in 60 countries but its bitumen emulsion plants are relatively new to the French market. But interest from French contractors at the show is proving high, said managing director Erik Haugaard. Mobile ENH equipment is typically used for producing a mix for road repairs. Basing the ENH mill near to where repairs are taking place enables the patching equipment to return at regular intervals for a new supply of material.

Atlas Copco, which is opening a new competence centre in Europe, is to move a divisional headquarters to China and has also hinted at further acquisitions. The new Atlas Copco Generator Competence Centre in Zaragoza, Spain, is scheduled to be in full operation by 2013, and is subject to final approval by local authorities. The decision to launch the centre for generators was announced by Atlas Copco’s portable energy division at INTERMAT.

Dominating Hidromek’s stand at INTERMAT is its 30.5tonne HMK300LC excavator. In common with the other gen series excavators, the HMK300LC has Hidromek’s latest cab design, which offers more room for the operator and the “Opera” user interface designed to optimise the excavator’s force, speed and consumption.

Inan Makina is best known as a breaker company but has greatly expanded its range in the last year to meet customer demand for other types of attachment. Breakers are joined on the stand by examples from its other lines, which now include hydraulic compactors, augers, pulverisers, crushers and sorting grabs. Atlas Copco has launched its new Hurricane B4-41/1000 CE booster compressor, which it says offers advanced operational, safety and maintenance features that result in low downtime. “Drilling for oil, gas, water and geothermal energy are critical operations where there is little margin, or tolerance, for booster failure and downtime.

Josh Meyer, region manager for Caterpillar’s paving products in EAME territories, says the firm expects to see considerable sales growth. “The paving business is back in the mode of expansion. Even in Europe we’re starting to see growth in spending in infrastructure and growth in the paving business,” said Meyer.

The Daemonator struck fear into the hearts of its competitors during INTERMAT, according to Won-Hae Lee, chairman of Korean attachment firm Daemo Engineering. Complete with flashing lights and intimidating electronic voice, the attachment-wielding 2.4m high robot, modelled loosely on a Transformers character, uses Daemo’s hammers, shears, compaction plates and grabs as part of its construction.

Cat has revised its asphalt compactor range with Stage IIIb engines, revised drum options and a new cab layout. The changes also bring an all-new model – the CD44B – in the seven/eight tonne class, taking the model count to four.
