Volvo is increasing its stake in German engine firm Deutz to 25%. The two firms have had a technical partnership for engine development for some time and Volvo bought a minority share in the pioneering diesel firm some years ago. However this new development sees a new cementing of the relationship between the two companies. The move makes Volvo the largest single shareholder in Deutz, with a 25% stake in the firm. Work is well underway on a massive highway project in Vietnam designed to boost transport connections between key cities. The country’s Ministry of Transport has announced that it expects to complete upgrading and widening work on National Highway I by the end of 2016. The upgraded highway will improve connections between the cities of Chan Tho and Hanoi. The project is being carried out under a build-operate-transfer model and has is expected to cost some US$4.27 billion.

In Peru the private Investment Promotion Agency (ProInversion) is now receiving bids for the Panamericana Sur road project, designed to connect with neighbouring Chile. The contract is due to be awarded on 2 July 2012. The project was put to tender in October 2010. The new route will measure some 430km. The fact that the project has now reached this advanced stage is a measure of how diplomatic relations have improved between Chile and Peru in recent years. In Russian capital Moscow the Department for Transport and Road Infrastructure has prepared a draft ordinance restricting heavy truck transport in hot weather. The document is introducing temporary traffic limitations for the transportation of heavy cargo. The restrictions apply to asphalt-concrete roads during 15th June – 15th August and applies when ambient temperatures top 32° C. The restrictions are not expected to last for more than 30 days. Huge highway investment plans have been established by the authorities in China’s Henan Province. The planned spending on highway construction in Henan during 2012 is some US$4.41 billion in all, which will see the highway network reaching a total of 6,000km. The authorities in the province have set a total transportation budget of some $7.27 billion for 2012.

In Indian capital Delhi investment plans are being made for the city’s transport infrastructure. Projects planned include building an elevated road link connecting Azadpur and Prembari Pul, as well as extending Barapullah road up to INA Market. These projects will cost some $345 million. The city authorities also plan to invest in 600 new low-floor buses, and a new monorail project to improve Delhi’s public transport system.

The authorities in the Russian city of St Petersburg plan to invest heavily in transport infrastructure. A budget of US$59.24 billion in all has been projected for the necessary work. Final approval has to be given for the budget at this stage.

The VDMA (German Engineering Federation) has published a new short guideline for construction companies and dealers on non-EU legislation compliant construction machines. Wacker Neuson is moving production of compact machines to a new facility located in the Austrian town of Hörsching. According to the firm, this factory is now one of the largest plans building compact construction machines in the world. Work to build the new plant commenced in June 2011 and compact excavators are now rolling off the production lines at the factory. The need for a new plant became apparent when Wacker Neuson signed a supply agreement with caterpillar for machines. "

In Peru plans are moving ahead for the Via Parque Rimac road project. Contractor Linea Amarilla (Lamsac) looks set to handle the deal, which will cost US$600 million in all to construct. Some $450 million of financing will be arranged for the project. The construction work involves building a tunnel under the Rimac River as well as construction two viaducts and is expected to require three years to complete.
