Brazil’s road infrastructure is to be improved with a share of the Brazilian Bank for Economic and Social Development’s (BNDES) US $ 1.36 billion (BRL 2.76bn) investment fund for the states of Minas Gerais and Maranhao. The money will also be spent on socioeconomic projects in education, health, sanitation, and public safety.

Data from the Nepalese Government shows that work is on-going to upgrade the country’s road network. Public Road Statistics from the Ministry of Physical Planning, Works and Transport Management show that 1,180km of new roads have been constructed in Nepal in the 2011-2012 fiscal year. The statistics reveal that of the 1,180km of roads, 290km were surfaced with asphalt and 407km were gravel roads, while there were also 47 new bridges built in the period. Crimean Venture Company (CVC) is ready to invest over US $ 1.5 billion in infrastructure projects, including road-based projects, in the Autonomous Republic Crimea. The list of projects also features development of railways, the construction of a sea port, a new airport, reclamation systems, industrial and logistics complexes, waste processing and disposal plants in the north of the peninsula. The development of tourist complexes in the south-eastern part is another element of the $ 1.5 billion investment.

The construction of the 14.4km D1 motorway stretch between Budimir - Bidovce near Kosice in eastern Slovakia could begin in 2014 or 2015. Building works for the Budimir-Bidovce D1 route should take three years, followed by the construction of another stretch of the D1 from Bidovce up to the Ukrainian border. The latter works are estimated for completion sometime after 2020. More than 40 so-called ‘zombie’ road projects previously defeated for environmental reasons or abandoned by previous governments are reported to have been resuscitated. While 44 schemes are planned or are under way, a further 150 projects have been identified by the Campaign for Better Transport (CBT). The UK is engaged in the largest road construction programme in 25 years. The CBT worked out that the 190 projects it is aware of would cost at least US $ 32.01 billion (£20bn). In Western Australia a series of road works will be carried out by the Gateway WA Consortium. The Federal Government is funding US$699 million (A$686 million) of the work, which involves improvements to the interchange at the Tonkin-Roe Highways junction, widening the Tonking Highway to six lanes and also improving the Leach Highway. The consortium comprises Leighton Contractors, AECOM, Georgiou, BG&E and GHD.

Five major highway maintenance contracts will be opened to tender in Mexico shortly. In all the contracts will cover 2,015km of roads while the work is expected to cost US$727 million in all. Key road links to be improved include the 300km Zacatecas-Norponiente road, the 430km road connecting Zacatecas with Sur, the 410km road from Jalisco to Centro and the 450km road concession between Jalisco and Oriente. The tender process is being handled by Mexico's Transport and Communications body, SCT.

The Chinese Government is providing neighbouring Nepal with expertise and funding for the ring road development around capital Kathmandu. This has been arranged through a bilateral agreement between the Chinese and Nepalese governments. The programme of works is getting under way and will see the widening of 27km of the ring road from its present four lanes to eight lanes in all. The Chinese Government funded the detailed survey design although the contractor has yet to be selected for the project.

Eurovia Infrastructure is the only contractor to secure a position on all three Lots of the US $ 144.02 million (£90mn) Hertfordshire Highways Structural Maintenance and Surface Treatments Framework contracts. The contracts began on 1 October 2012 and will run for four years. Lot 1 of the Hertfordshire County Council contract covers carriageway and footway surface treatments; Lot 2 covers carriageway resurfacing; and Lot 3 covers general civil engineering.

The Israeli firm Shikun & Binui Holdings (Shikun & Binui) is now moving ahead with its US$390 million road deal in Nigeria. South Africa’s Department of Transport has set a budget of US$773 million to tackle road maintenance and also address a backlog of repairs on provincial roads. This budget is being spent in the 2011-2012 financial year. However increased spending is expected for the 2012-2013, with a budget of $1.17 billion having been set for provincial road maintenance.
