Caterpillar claims it can boost compaction efficiency for contractors with its new machine drive power (MDP) package. This innovative machine-integrated soil compaction measurement technology has been tested by contractors at several jobsites around the world and is now coming to market. The MDP package is one part of an intelligent compaction (IC) offering from the firm.

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is staging the global launch of its Tier 4 Final equipment range at Conexpo 2014. The new Tier 4 line-up, among 17 innovative products on show, includes new generation E-Series excavators, G-Series articulated haulers and H-Series wheeled loaders.

Case Construction Equipment will be exhibiting its new M Series dozers at Conexpo 2014. Ranging in power from 68kW to 157kW, the new M Series models – the 750M, 850M, 1150M, 1650M and 2050M – were introduced in North America in October 2013 and will be fully launched by March 2014.

IPAF supports the position paper issued by the Fédération Européenne de la Manutention (FEM) Product Group for Cranes and Lifting Equipment, which makes clear that tower cranes are designed and manufactured to lift loads, not people. The paper also highlights that cranes should not be used for entertainment purposes. Such rides will not be permitted at CONEXPO-CON/AGG.

Sandvik Mining is now using Volvo Penta engines in its underground trucks and loaders. The advanced engines meet Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB emission standards and are claimed to reduce fuel and ventilation costs in comparison with other units. The Volvo Penta engineers designed a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit in the exhaust system that converts NOx gas into nitrogen and water. The Volvo Penta exhaust-treatment solution also reduces DPM levels without the need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF).

Wirtgen’s novel inspection system offers a quick indication of wear rates on the cutting tools of the firm’s surface miners. Called the Wirtgen Pick Inspection (WPI) system, this tool comprises eight sensors that can make fast measurements and which are integrated into the cutting drum compartment of the surface miner. The German mining machinery market is at a record high, according to the German Engineering Federation, VDMA. Mining machinery manufacturers based in Germany hardly suffered from the financial crisis, said VDMA president Dr Thomas Lindner. Since 2007, their annual turnover has grown by about 13% on average. In 2011, growth was nearly 27% and turnover then increased by another 28% in 2012 to reach €6.2bn.

Installation and testing has been completed at the Atlas Copco factory in Örebro, Sweden, on the first system integration of Carlson Machine Control’s CBx5 control box console running Carlson DrillGrade software on a FlexiROC HEC3 C65 drilling system.
