Bosnia is cancelling a tender for part of its Corridor 5C project, an integral part of the class-A north-south central European route E73. Route E73 runs around 700km from Hungary south through eastern Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Adriatic Sea in the area of Ploče port. The longest part of this corridor goes through Bosnia and Herzegovina – nearly 340km. Work on Indonesia’s key Trans-Papua road project is now expected to complete in 2018, later than originally intended. The route will measure 4,300km when complete and work on 3,850km of the route has already been finished. The country’s Ministry of Public Works and Housing has said that the completion of the route will help cut transport costs, boosting competitiveness. But work on a 30km stretch of the road between Manokwari and Kibar has still to be finished due to various problems however.

Montenegro’s prime minister Dusko Markovic has given the thumbs up to progress of construction on the Klopot tunnel on the priority part of the Bar-Boljare motorway. He said that the works are being carried out according to the highest standards on 24km of the motorway. Markovic also said during his recent site visit that the government had allocated €194 million for motorway works in 2017. An additional €200-300 million will be set aside for completion of works.

The European Commission approved the financing package for the D3 motorway stretch Zilina, Strazov-Zilina, Brodno in Slovakia. The project is part of the Zilina by-pass. Approval was fast-tracked because the project had received an independent quality evaluation from the technical advisors of EU's JASPERS (Joint Assistance to Support Projects in European Regions). A consortium that includes Hungarian firms Euroaszfalt and Duna Aszfalt has won the tender to construct a 30km section of the M4 motorway between Ullo and Albertirsa. Nearly €169 million will be invested in the project, according to Hungarian media. Other bidders were Kozgep of Hungary and Itinera of Italy. The Polish General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways – GDDKiA –reports that 14 bids have been received for construction of three sections of the S19 dual carriageway. A consortium formed by Pizzarotti and Fundamental Infrastructure pitched the lowest bid for the Krasnik Poludnie - Janow Lubelski Polnoc section, amounting to nearly €80 million. The Texas Transportation Commission is planning a 10-year programme for key road projects. Included in this programme will be a four-year programme of works aimed at reducing congestion around the state’s major cities. This will be worth some US$2.5 billion. Kuwait’s key construction contract, to build the Subbiya Bridge project, is proceeding on track. The project is now 73% complete. The contract is a major one for Kuwait as it involves the construction of the 36km long Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah Causeway. The work is likely to meet it construction schedule in 2018. Canada will be the bauma 2019 partner country. This is a significant agreement as Canada is the world’s seventh biggest construction machinery market. Approval has been given for Vietnam’s Hoa Binh-Moc Chau expressway project. The go ahead has been given by Vietnam’s Government. The project has an estimated cost of US$881 million and is planned as a public-private partnership. The construction work is expected to take 42 months and the new route will connect Hoa Binh to Moc Chau. When complete the expressway will cut the journey time between Hanoi and Moc Chau by around two hours.

The Mersey Gateway project in England has passed a significant milestone, with over half of the main bridge deck stretching across the River Mersey. Work to install stay cables on the main bridge also passed a key point, with installation of the 31st 150m long cable – the halfway point for stay cable installations on the pylon. New York City is now working towards cutting out traffic deaths, as part of a Vision Zero programme. The strategy is already seeing major benefits with traffic fatalities having been reduced by 23% since 2013. An official report reveals that the city’s road safety programme is having a positive effect, due in part to the use of data to identify prime factors in road deaths from crashes.

Financing has been found to pay for road upgrade projects in Ivory Coast. The Morocco-based banking business Banque Centrale Populaire (BCP) will provide nearly US$183 million for improvement works to two stretches of highway. The funding will allow the Kokonou to Apprompronou road to be resurfaced with asphalt. Meanwhile the road running from Yamoussoukro through Bouaflé to Daloa will also be improved.
