Volvo CE skid steer loaders are being used for road demarcation purposes in California
A contractor in the US state of California is using skid steer loaders from 359 Volvo CE to help in its line painting operations. The machines are being used to carry out major road marking projects in Southern California.

The first machine bought by the firm has been used on the I-5 highway. Driving along the centre double line, the skid steer loader is used to remove the reflective pavement markers from the asphalt and pop them into the 1.5m bucket. To boost performance, contractor Payco's industrial team developed a modification to the skid steer loader with a plate welded to the front bucket edge. As a result, the MC115C removes the reflectors efficiently at high speeds.

The machine has proven itself tough enough to cope with the shock of popping markers from the pavement. And satisfied with the skid steer loader’s performance, Payco recently added a second Volvo MC115C to the fleet to grind off thermoplastic striping from roadways during relining projects.

Airport runway, taxiway and parking areas make high demands on paving requirements, both with concrete and asphalt techniques. Mike Woof reports. High quality surface finishes are required in airport environments for runways, taxiways and aircraft parking areas. Because of the speed at which aircraft take off and land and the massive forces exerted due to the weight of the aircraft, particularly during landing, runway structures need to be incredibly strong. The surfaces also have to be constructed to very
