Vietnam bridge, road and highway development projects

Vietnam is pushing ahead with a series of road, highway and bridge projects that will improve the country’s transport network. Feasibility studies for three stretches of the North-South Expressway have been received by Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport (MoT). Vietnam is pushing ahead with a series of road, highway and bridge projects that will improve the country’s transport network.


Feasibility studies for three stretches of the North-South Expressway have been received by Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport (MoT). The 29km stretch from Nha Trang to Cam Lam is expected to cost US$177.9 million, with work starting in 2019 and due for completion in 2021. The 60km stretch from Dau Giay to Tan Phu will be built from 2018 to 2022. The 101km stretch from Vinh Hao to Phan Thiet is being constructed through the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model. The 64km stretch from Ninh Binh to Thanh Hoa will take three years to build and is expected to cost $613 million.

Work is commencing on the $342 million Hoang Cau-Voi Phuc Road project in Hanoi. The project to build the 2.2km stretch includes two overpasses crossing the Nguyen Chi Thanh and Hoang Cau-Voi Phuc crossroads and the Giang Vo-Lang Ha and Hoang Cau-Voi Phuc crossroads.

Designs are currently being assessed for the proposed Can Gio Bridge project by the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). The bridge is intended to replace the Binh Kanh ferry link, improving connections to central Hanoi. The new bridge will span Cha River and Soai Rap River, running between Can Gio and Nha Be District and measuring 7.4km in length.

Loans worth nearly $301 million will pay for work on the Trung Luong-My Thuan Expressway project. The four banks are the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV), the Vietnam Bank for Industry and Trade (VietinBank), the Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Agribank) and the Vietnam Prosperity Commercial Bank (VPBank). The route is being built by contractor BOT Trung Luong-My Thuan JSC.

Other projects include highways linking La Son District with Cam Lo District, Ba Bot District with Cao Bo District as well as Nha Trang City with My Thuan 2 Bridge and Dau Giay Town.

A funding deal worth US$1.6 billion is being provided by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the Ben Luc yo Long Thanh National Highway. This route connects Dong Nai, Ho Chi Minh City and Long An. A portion of the necessary funding for ground clearance for the route is being provided by Vietnam’s State Budget. However the country is stopping work on the National Highway 3 project
