Slovakia: Strazov-Brodno D3 route around Zilnia to get EU funds

The European Union is providing nearly €202 million to finish the section of the D3 motorway between Strazov and Brodno around the city of Zilina in Slovakia. Zilnia is in north-west of Slovakia, around 200km from the capital Bratislava and close to the Czech and Polish borders. It is the fourth largest city of Slovakia with a population of around 85,000. The European Union is providing nearly €202 million to finish the section of the D3 motorway between Strazov and Brodno around the city of Zilina in Slovakia.

Zilnia is in north-west of Slovakia, around 200km from the capital Bratislava and close to the Czech and Polish borders. It is the fourth largest city of Slovakia with a population of around 85,000.

The D3, formerly D18, is sometimes called the Kysuce Motorway. It was originally to be only a two-lane motorway in the Čadca - Slovak/Polish border section, and four-lane motorway in the remaining section Hričovské Podhradie - Čadca.

The motorway section connects to the D1 motorway and will make travel easier between Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria. The project's first stage involves building a tunnel and two motorway bridges.

The EU money comes from the Cohesion Fund that between 2014 and 2020 is focussing on Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

The Cohesion Fund is allocating €63.4 billion for infrastructure and environmental projects and programmes. One area is trans-European transport networks including highways.
