The first tender for construction of the Nis-Pristina motorway could be called by the end of his year, according to Zorana Mihajlovic, Serbia’s minister of construction.

Value of the first phase of the project is estimated at €240 million. Around 20% of the amount will be financed from aid, while the remainder will be secured by the EBRD (1166 European Bank for Reconstruction and Development) and the EIB (1054 European Investment Bank).

The motorway will be part of a larger project to give faster access, through Pristina, capital of Kosovo, to Albania’s Adriatic Sea port of Drac. The planned 77km route will go from Nis via Merosina, Prokuplje and Kursumlija to Merdare and continue to Pristina.

The cost will likely top €800 million but contribute to the economic development of Serbia’s Toplica District that borders Kosovo.

That’s $160 billion worth of goods trucked each year between Detroit in the US state of Michigan and the Canadian city of Windsor in the province of Ontario - the Windsor-Detroit Corridor. There are several types of crossings, but the vast majority of commercial traffic must use the 2.3km Ambassador Bridge (see box). A new bridge was initially prop
