Myanmar is to benefit from a new expressway project, which will boost transport and economic development. The expressway will run between the Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway.

A portion of the funding required will be provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Japan will also assist with technical help for the work.

The project is being managed by the Yangon City Development Committee, which is also sourcing funding for the work. The planning for the project meanwhile has been carried out by the Ministry of Construction of Myanmar.

The expressway will be around 58km in length, while the project also requires the construction of a 1.4km bridge spanning the Bago River as well as connecting roads. The work is expected to be complete in 2025.
