Brazil opens tenders for highway concessions

Two major highway concessions are being opened for tender in Brazil. The deals are for two, 30-year concessions worth some US$5.43 billion. The tenders cover the widening, maintenance and operation of some 2.028km of highways. The tender process is being handled by Brazil's national ground transport agency, ANTT. The largest tender is for 1,177km of highway and including BR-060, BR-153 and BR-262.

    Around 130 road projects are facing delays in Brazil, according to a data from Brazil's national land transport association ANTT. A report in the newspaper O Estado de Paulo noted that many delays are caused by problems with environmental licences and expropriations, as well as a decrease in road traffic due to the economic crisis.     A complex legal tangle is surrounding Brazil’s BR-101 highway concession. The signing of the concession deal was suspended following the issue of two separate injunctions by the country’s legal authorities. These injunctions also delayed bidding that had been planned by the ANTT, Brazil's National Authority for Terrestrial Transport.
