Wirtgen TCM 180i

2395 Wirtgen says that its TCM 180i texture curing unit further improves pavement quality achieved with Wirtgen slipform equipment.

Its modular design permits working widths between 4-18 m. Wirtgen says that a new engine unit means the 180i has the most eco-friendly engine technology in compliance with emission level EU Stage 4/US Tier 4 Final.

The engine can also be equipped with an additional diesel particulate filter (DPF).

As soon as concrete has been paved by the slipform paver, it must be protected without delay to prevent curing moisture from evaporating, as this causes tension which, in turn, leads to cracks. When paving concrete, the curing unit with its automatic spraying and brooming system, follows directly behind the slipform paver to produce the desired surface texture.

Finally, the spraying system applies a coating to the fresh concrete to retard evaporation of curing moisture.

With its new operating concept, the curing unit can now be operated intuitively, just like the Wirtgen slipform pavers of the SP 90 and SP 60 series. In addition to a more modern and clearer arrangement, the operator's console also features a number of new service and control functions, optimizing the work process.

Its new hydraulic concept has a positive impact on the work process, for the traction drive can now be switched at different speeds, for example, between working and transport mode. Proportional control supports precision height adjustment to meet every requirement.

Additionally, Wirtgen has enlarged its range of different surface textures to cater to the diverse wishes of its customers globally. In addition to the established functions of transverse brooming and spraying, longitudinal brooming and spraying – and even the application of a diagonal finish – will be possible in the future.

The machine can also be fitted with mounts for a burlap or synthetic turf.

A film unwinding device - known as a polyroll - helps to protect the concrete quickly and effectively from the negative effects of sudden rain. Traveling in reverse gear directly behind the slipform paver, the machine spreads plastic sheeting to protect the concrete from rain.

Concrete overlays have a long history and proven success in the state of Iowa. Mitchell and Worth counties in north central Iowa have led the way. In the past three years, they have put down approximately 241km of 102mm concrete overlay. Concrete Foundations Inc. (CFI), based out of Hiawatha, Iowa, has slipformed almost 80km of the counties' overlays, including 45km this paving season near the town of Osage. CFI has slipformed most of the overlays with its GOMACO two-track GP-2600 paver. This season, the co

Local contractor Galvão Engenharia opted to use an SP 850 slipform paver from Wirtgen as one of the key machines in the job to upgrade and improve the Anel Viário de Fortaleza. This important highway connects Fortaleza, located in the federal state of Ceará, with the busy port of Pecém. The deepwater port in Pecém is some 60km from Fortaleza and since it was inaugurated in 2002, the city has become a primary port for exporting fruit products in refrigerated containers.
