Colombia targets journey time reduction and safety

Key links in Colombia will benefit from upgrades and improvements with US$156 million being invested in the Cuestaboba-Bucaramanga road project. Work on this double lane highway in 4001 Santander started earlier this month. The project forms part of the Bucaramanga-Cucuta road scheme and will provide a new connection between Colombia and Venezuela.

Transport companies will be able to reduce journey times between 3-4 hours as a result. An environmental licence has already been issued and several plots have already been acquired.

Consorcio Vias Nacionales, which comprises the firms 4883 Mario Alberto Huertas Cotes and Meyan, will carry out the works.

Meanwhile work on the new highway project to Ibague is expected to be finished ahead of schedule. The 23km section to Chicoral will be finished in June 2010 and the Ibague highland section should be completed by December 2010. The scheme forms part of the Bogota-Buenaventura road improvement project, which is aimed at reducing journey times and improving safety.

The Colombian Transport Ministry intends to spend US$2.4 billion on a series of road repairs and upgrades. Major highways being improved under the plans include the Curos-Malaga road and the Bucaramanga-Cuestaboba link.
