Two Thai highways approved

Two major highway projects are getting the go ahead in Thailand. The two highways are expected to cost US$4.18 billion in all.

Two major highway projects are getting the go ahead in Thailand. The two highways are expected to cost US$4.18 billion in all. These will be PPP projects and are being handled under a fast-track process that will shorten the time required for financing. One projects is for the construction of the Bang Yai (Nonthaburi) - Kanchanaburi highway. The other project is to build the Bang Pa-in (Ayuttahya)-Nakhon Ratchasima highway. The civils work for both projects will be paid for by the Government of Thailand, while private funding will pay for maintenance and operation over the 30-year concessions.

    Proposals are being put forward for a major motorway project in Thailand. Costing an estimated US$1.16 billion, the tender process for the Bang-pa-in-Nakhon Sawan motorway project is expected to commence in 2019. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project is due to start in due course. Another motorway project planned is for the Hat Yai-Sadao link. This last will be carried out under the PPP model and tendering is expected to commence in 2018.

    Expropriation costs are rising for two major Thailand motorway projects, according to the Department of Highways director-general Thanin Somboon. Around US$165 million were estimated to be needed about eight years ago for the 96km Bang Yai-Kanchanaburi motorway project.
