Costs up for Nakhon Pathom-Cha-Am and Bang Yai-Kanchanaburi roads

Expropriation costs are rising for two major Thailand motorway projects, according to the Department of Highways director-general Thanin Somboon. Expropriation costs are rising for two major Thailand motorway projects, according to the Department of Highways director-general Thanin Somboon.

Around US$165 million were estimated to be needed about eight years ago for the 96km Bang Yai-Kanchanaburi motorway project. However, the latest estimate is about $610 million, said highways director-general Thanin Somboon.

This is on top of the estimated construction cost of around $1.2 billion, he said.

For the 109km Nakhon Pathom-Cha-Am motorway project, expropriation costs have nearly doubled to just more than $500 million, bringing the total project cost to more than $2 billion, a 13% hike, he said.

Government approval for the extra funds will be needed, but Thanin said the projects remain on schedule.

Thailand's transport ministry recently approved an “action plan” covering 36 infrastructure projects worth in total nearly US$26 billion.

Construction and maintenance of motorways and expressways will account for 18.7% of the amount, according to the Post.
