A series of road projects is being awarded in Nepal. The announcements over the winning tenders for 13 projects is being made in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu. Financing worth US$300 million is being provided from Indian sources.
An important new road link in Nepal is now open to traffic, having been completed by the Nepal Army. Construction of the new National Priority Road has taken 15 years due in part to the challenging nature of the terrain. The road runs to the north of Nepal to Rasuwagadi, lying on the border with China. India's Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) has offered to build the 76km, US$1.01 billion Kathmandu-Terai Fast Track road in Nepal under an annuity model, proposing that the government issue a global tender. This model is suitable as investors, including IL&FS and other Indian firms Reliance Infrastructure and Larsen & Toubro, have proved unwilling to undertake the project under a BOOT system. The Kathmandu-Terai Fast Track road will carry an estimated 3,000 vehicles a day.
A new project by the Government of Nepal recently connected Mugu a distant, mountainous and remote district of Karnali Zone to the country’s road connectivity and has been the 73rd district of the 75 in road connection. The World Bank (WB) is providing funds worth US$60 million to help Nepal build and repair bridges. The money will be used to build 121 new bridges and maintain 426 existing bridges that provide connections on Nepal’s Strategic Road Network (SRN). This budget has been set under the WB’s lending mechanism, project for result (P4R).
