A series of road projects is being awarded in Nepal. The announcements over the winning tenders for 13 projects is being made in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu. Financing worth US$300 million is being provided from Indian sources.
Work is starting in Nepal on a new tunnel project worth some US$347 million. The new tunnel forms part of the 58km route between Hetauda and Kathmandu. The project developer is Nepal Purbadhar Bikas (NPBCL) and the tunnel is being built at Bhimphedi in Makwanpur. The new route will reduce the journey time between Hetauda and Kathmandu from six hours at present to just one hour when the tunnel opens to traffic in December 2016. A new stretch of highway is now open to traffic in Nepal. The Nepalthok-Khurkot Road recently had its official opening. Some US$46.2 million was spent on the section of highway, with much of the funding being provided by the Japanese Government. The Nepalthok-Khurkot section of road forms part of a larger project and is Phase 3, Part-I of the Banepa-Sindhuli-Bardibas BP highway.
Plans are in hand for upgrades to the existing ring road around Nepal's capital Kathmandu. This 28km route will be widened to cope with the growing traffic volumes and high congestion levels seen at present and the work is expected to cost US$55 million.
The bridge linking Old Baneshwor and Sinamangal over the Bagmati River in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu has now been officially opened. This was carried out by the former minister for Physical Planning and Transport although the bridge itself had been open to traffic for five months prior to the inauguration.
