A series of road projects is being awarded in Nepal. The announcements over the winning tenders for 13 projects is being made in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu. Financing worth US$300 million is being provided from Indian sources.
Road projects in Nepal will benefit from a further US$55 million of funding from the World Bank. The funding will be used for Nepal’s Road Sector Development Project (RSDP). The RSDP calls for a series of works right across the country, including the construction of 33 bridges, maintenance to 355 bridges and 700km of existing roads and a detailed analysis of Nepal’s road network.
Foreign financing will help fund Nepal’s Kathmandu-Kulekhani-Hetaudi Tunnel Highway project. The 58km highway is expected to cost some US$375 million in all and Nepal Purbadhar Bikash Company (NPBCL) plans to raise some $273.5 million of this from foreign investors. This move comes after it NPBCL to secure funding from local investors for the project. The Chinese government is upgrading Nepal's capital Kathmandu ring road to eight lanes and the work is due for completion in the next three years. The upgrading includes improving a 9km section of road from Kalanki-Satdobato-Koteshwor. China agreed to widen the 27km ring road in February 2011.
