Panama’s projected plans for infrastructure

Panama’s Ministry of Public Works (MOP) is spending some US$2.96 billion during its present administration on infrastructure projects. These include the construction of a fourth bridge over the Panama Canal, which will link the Albrook district and the North Corridor. There are four road widening projects planned. Panama’s Ministry of Public Works (MOP) is spending some US$2.96 billion during its present administration on infrastructure projects. These include the construction of a fourth bridge over the Panama Canal, which will link the Albrook district and the North Corridor. There are four road widening projects planned. The link between the Las Americas bridge and Arraijan will be expanded to eight lanes and the Panamericana road between La Chorrera and San Carlos will be expanded to six lanes. The Omar Torrijos road will be widened to four lanes between the Centenario bridge and Corozal while the the Panamericana road will also be widened to four lanes between David and Santiago. Other projects include an upgrade to the Agua Fria-Yaviza road in Darien province, a new road linking Miguel de la Borda and Cocle del Norte and a planned tender for the construction of a new road linking Changuinola and Almirante.

The upgrade will improve capacity and safety on the Panama stretch of the highway, which provides a key link through Central America, connecting South America with North America. Work on the Panama stretch of the Panamericana is expected to cost some US$543 million in all. The contract for the engineering services work will be carried out by Viaponte.

    Panama is working on projects to construct two new bridge crossings over the Panama Canal. According to the Panama Canal Authority (ACP), work is progressing well on the project to build the third bridge over the Canal.
