A major highway project in Nicaragua is coming closer to fruition. The new link would cross the country, connecting its Caribbean and Pacific Ocean coasts. A proposal has been made to extend a key stretch of Russia’s high speed highway network. The highway connecting Moscow to Kazan would be upgraded and also extended in a bid to improve transport and cut journey times. A new highway section would run from Kazan, in the Volga Region, to Yekaterinburg, in the Urals, with planning already underway.

In Brazil plans are being set out for a new tunnel that would connect the coastal cities of Santos and Guarujá. The project is estimated to cost some US$803 million to construct, according to a report by Business News Americas. The tunnel would by 1.7km long, carry six lanes of traffic and be at an estimated depth of 35m. A process for pre-qualification for those firms showing an interest in the project has been started. New Zealand is bucking the trend worldwide on improving road safety with an increase in crashes on its roads. The country saw 5.7 road deaths/100,000 people in 2014 according to the International Road Traffic and Accident Database, an increase of 16.1% from the previous year.
