New Laos-Thailand bridge planned

Plans are moving forward for the new bridge structure connecting Thailand with neighbouring Laos. The Mekong Friendship Bridge will be 1.35km long and is expected to cost US$84.3 million to construct. The building work on the bridge will commence in 2019, with the necessary surveying work as well as the design now close to completion.

The bridge is expected to be complete by 2014 and spans the Mekong River between Thailand's Chiang Rai province and Laos' Bokeo province.     Approval has been given by the respective authorities in Thauland and Laos for a new bridge connecting the two countries. Called the fifth Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge, this new link is expected to boost trade, transport and tourism between the two nations. The bridge will connect Thailand’s Bung Kan Province with Borikhamxay Province in Laos. Meanwhile proposals are also being made for the sixth Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge to connect Ubon Ratchathani in Thailand with Saravan province in Laos.
